Cargill in Central America has combined its operations with Corporacion Pipasa, a leading poultry and meat processor in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is now a part of Cargill. All regulatory approvals have been completed. Terms of the transaction were not made public.

Costa Rica - Canadian beef imports

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister of International Trade Peter Van Loan announced today that Costa Rica has reopened its market to allow for full, unrestricted access to Canadian beef and beef product exports. To highlight this success, Canada's top quality beef will be served at the Canadian Ambassador's Official Residence in San José, marking the first time in almost a decade that Canadian beef will be shipped to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica - The pork market

In 2009, the annual per capita consumption of pork increased from 8,9 kilograms in 2004 to 11.6 Kilograms, 33 per cent more, in Costa Rica. Last year was the best of the last five years although the market faced the A/H1N1 (also known as swine fever). The Chamber of Swine Producers invested significantly in publicity and the negative effects were curtailed to only one week. Moreover, the campaigns positively affected consumers and a rise in consumption was seen across the country.
